Design & Technology
At Battle Primary Academy, we understand that design and technology allows pupils to solve problems, think creatively and develop ideas. DT offers pupils a chance to use creative thinking and activity within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. The school is committed to nurturing pupils’ curiosity and creativity, as well as preparing them for living in a modern world where technology is rapidly changing and advancing.
Intent
At Battle Primary Academy, we believe design technology (DT) prepares children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. It encourages children to become independent, creative problem-solvers. Children can develop the skills needed in the designing, making and modifying a range of functional products through first-hand experiences. Through the study of DT, children can work independently and as a team to combine their practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. Children have the opportunity to reflect on and evaluate, present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts. We believe DT helps children to become informed future consumers and potential innovators.
Implementation
Battle Primary Academy uses and adapts Currirclum Mastero as a basis for planning, which allows for engaging cross-curricular links to be made.
At Battle Primary Academy, we aim to ensure all pupils acquire the basic skills needed in DT. Children are:
• Encouraged to utilise materials that are readily available to design and create.
• Able to design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and others.
• Encouraged to generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, and where appropriate, information and communication technology.
• Use various tools and equipment safely to perform practical tasks like, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing. • Evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.
• Able to build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger and more stable.
• Explore and use mechanisms (levers, sliders, wheels and axles) in their products.
• Able to understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.
• Equipped with the confidence and capability to use mechanical systems such as gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages throughout their later life.
• Able to understand and use electrical systems in their products such as series circuits, incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors.
• Use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes.
• Understand where food comes from.
• Prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques.
• Understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.
