Sport and P.E.

Physical Education at Battle Primary Academy

At Battle Primary Academy, we believe that high-quality physical education (PE) inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physically demanding activities. Our PE curriculum encourages children to embrace healthy, active lifestyles and promotes core values such as fairness, respect, and teamwork.

We are committed to providing a safe, supportive environment where physical education plays a vital and unique role in each pupil’s physical development, emotional health, and overall well-being. At Battle, we want our children to keep smiling and stay active!

Our Intent

Battle Primary Academy recognises the significant value of Physical Education in the development of the whole child.

We fully align with the aims of the National Curriculum for PE to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Implementation

PE is taught at Battle Primary Academy both as a discrete subject and, where appropriate, through cross-curricular links. Each year group follows a carefully mapped curriculum to ensure progressive development of knowledge, skills, and understanding. This sequential planning enables pupils to build on prior learning and prepare for future challenges, in line with the National Curriculum expectations and key stage outcomes.

Through our PE lessons, children:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills and grow in confidence, agility, balance, and coordination, both individually and in groups
  • Participate in both competitive and cooperative physical activities in a variety of increasingly challenging settings
  • Learn to apply and link a broad range of skills to perform actions and sequences of movement
  • Engage in meaningful communication, collaboration, and competition with peers
  • Develop strategies for improvement and the ability to evaluate their own success in different physical activities and sports

We enhance our curriculum through the use of our school’s unique context, including local grounds and facilities, and by drawing on community role models such as our PE ambassadors. Lessons are inclusive and differentiated to ensure every child can participate and progress, supported by our dedicated PE lead, Mr. Hancock.

Our wide-ranging curriculum and extensive extra-curricular provision provide all pupils with opportunities to find enjoyment, challenge, and success in physical activity. Children also gain an understanding of the rules and strategies of various games and sports, while developing positive sporting attitudes.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, our pupils demonstrate high levels of proficiency across all aspects of PE. They understand the important connection between physical activity and mental well-being and recognise the role of PE in leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Battle Primary Academy consistently performs well in a range of sports and proudly holds the Active School Gold Award for 2024–25—recognition of our outstanding PE provision and commitment to providing inclusive access to competitive sport for all pupils.
